India’s First 5150 Triathlon Launched in Chennai

Chennai- Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Friday launched India’s first-ever 5150 Triathlon under the global IRONMAN brand. The event is scheduled for January 11 at MGM Beach Resort, East Coast Road, Chennai.

The Chennai debut expands IRONMAN’s presence in India, which began with IRONMAN 70.3 Goa in 2019. Since then, Goa has evolved into the nation’s triathlon hub, attracting over 1,200 athletes from 50 countries. Building on this success, IRONMAN India now brings the world-renowned 5150 Olympic-distance format to Indian soil.

“The 5150 Triathlon will inspire athletes across age groups and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s reputation as a premier sporting destination. With strong government backing, we are committed to ensuring world-class infrastructure and organisation for this event,” said Deputy CM Stalin.

The 5150 Triathlon, first introduced globally in 2011, features a 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycling, and a 10 km run, serving as a stepping stone towards IRONMAN 70.3 and full-distance races.

In addition, the partnership also introduced the Duathlon Series to India, with race categories including Sprint (5 km Run, 20 km Cycle, 2.5 km Run), Olympic (10 km Run, 40 km Cycle, 5 km Run), and IRONKIDS Chennai (ages 6–16).

Deepak Raj, Country Head and Franchise Owner of IRONMAN India, said the launch not only expands IRONMAN’s race portfolio but also helps grow India’s running and cycling communities. “These races create entry points for newcomers while offering a competitive platform for seasoned athletes,” he added.

The event also saw the unveiling of the official 5150 Triathlon Chennai logo in the presence of senior state officials and IRONMAN India leadership.

With its launch, Chennai is set to host athletes from across India and abroad, marking a significant addition to the national sporting calendar.
