New Jersey – Manchester United kicked off their Premier League Summer Series campaign with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at MetLife Stadium.
Bruno Fernandes was the star of the night, scoring both goals for United—one from the penalty spot early in the match, and another with a composed finish in the second half. Jarrod Bowen responded for West Ham with a well-taken strike and nearly found an equaliser in stoppage time, but United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir produced a brilliant save to preserve the win.
United started aggressively and nearly scored in the opening minute. Fernandes played a precise through ball to Rasmus Hojlund, who charged forward and struck a powerful left-footed shot that clipped the outside of the post.
Just minutes later, West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola mishandled a high ball, which deflected off teammate El Hadji Malick Diouf and fell to Ayden Heaven. Although Heaven was moving away from goal, he was brought down by Areola, resulting in a clear penalty. Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted to give United the lead.
Ruben Amorim's side maintained the pressure. Hojlund fired over from a rebound after his pass was intercepted, while Fernandes narrowly missed with a dipping long-range effort. West Ham struggled to create meaningful chances, with James Ward-Prowse's acrobatic volley their only notable effort in the first half.
United thought they had doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Manuel Ugarte surged forward and set up Amad Diallo for a composed finish, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.
After the break, United quickly resumed their dominance. Hojlund pressured Max Kilman into losing possession, allowing Fernandes to race in on goal. However, his close-range shot lacked power and was saved by Areola. Kobbie Mainoo’s follow-up attempt was deflected for a corner.
From the resulting set-piece, Matthijs de Ligt forced a strong save from Areola with a powerful header. Just minutes later, Areola’s poor clearance gifted the ball to Mainoo, who found Fernandes. Spotting the goalkeeper slightly off his line, Fernandes lifted a superb finish into the net to double the lead.
West Ham responded in the 63rd minute through Bowen, who finished off a well-constructed move involving Jean-Clair Todibo and Tomas Soucek.
Both teams made sweeping changes shortly after, disrupting the rhythm of the game. Late in the match, Luis Guilherme fired a powerful shot just over the bar, and Bowen had one final chance in injury time. But Bayindir was equal to it, pulling off a brilliant save to ensure United held on for the win.
United now prepare for their next match against Bournemouth, who defeated Everton 3-0 earlier in the tournament.
