Crucial Test Awaits Indian Players in England Lions Series Ahead of Test Tour

New Delhi — While anticipation builds for the IPL 2025 playoffs in Mullanpur and Ahmedabad, several Indian cricketers and their coaches have already landed in England to gear up for a pivotal first-class series against the England Lions, beginning May 30 at Canterbury.

This tour is more than just a warm-up; it serves as a critical audition for several Test hopefuls. The India ‘A’ squad, led by opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, features numerous players aiming to adapt to English conditions and prove their mettle in a bid to secure a place in the playing XI for the first Test against England, scheduled for June 20 in Leeds.

Notably, B Sai Sudharsan and skipper Shubman Gill are set to join the squad for the second game, highlighting the significance of this ‘A’ series. For Easwaran, the matches present both a test and a major opportunity. A consistent reserve opener behind Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Easwaran now has a real chance at a long-awaited Test debut following Rohit’s retirement from the format.

However, Easwaran’s journey has had its setbacks. Critics point to past performances — notably, the 2023 India A tour of Australia, where he failed to cross 17 in four innings — as reasons why his Test cap has remained elusive. In Rohit’s absence, KL Rahul was preferred to open in Perth, emphasizing the need for Easwaran to deliver convincing performances now.

With Sudharsan arriving later and Gill potentially batting at No. 4, Easwaran could feature either as an opener or at one-down, depending on the team combination. This tour could well be his defining moment.

Alongside Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also looking to get used to English conditions. Sarfaraz Khan, who was overlooked for the Australia tour and left out of the current England Test squad, will be especially eager to prove himself in overseas conditions.

In the bowling department, Shardul Thakur and Akash Deep aim to fine-tune their skills with the Dukes ball ahead of the Test series. Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Kumar, Harshit Rana, Khaleel Ahmed, and Anshul Kamboj will also be keen to impress the selectors.

Kamboj, in particular, stands out after a stellar domestic season, including a remarkable 10-wicket haul in an innings against Kerala during the Ranji Trophy. Known for his ability to generate movement while maintaining tight lines, he could be a valuable backup if injuries arise during the England tour.

It’s rare for India to field as many as seven or more Test players in an ‘A’ team match, underscoring how vital this series is to the national setup. Though the opposition and conditions may not exactly mirror the main Test series, these matches offer selectors a crucial look at potential long-term fixtures in India’s evolving Test lineup.
