Govt Tightens Surveillance on GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Amid Safety Concerns

New Delhi— The government has stepped up regulatory action against the unauthorised sale and promotion of GLP-1-based weight loss drugs, citing growing concerns over their misuse across India.

According to the Health Ministry, the Drugs Controller General of India has intensified surveillance to ensure ethical practices in the distribution and use of these medications, which are increasingly being sold through retail pharmacies, online platforms, wholesalers, and wellness clinics.

GLP-1 drugs—used for managing conditions like Type 2 Diabetes and increasingly prescribed for weight loss—can pose serious health risks if consumed without proper medical supervision. Authorities have flagged concerns over their easy availability on demand, often without valid prescriptions.

The government warned that strict action will be taken against violations, including cancellation of licenses, financial penalties, and prosecution under applicable laws. Surveillance efforts are expected to intensify further in the coming weeks.

Earlier, on March 10, regulators issued a comprehensive advisory to manufacturers, banning surrogate advertising and any indirect promotional tactics that could mislead consumers or encourage off-label use.

Enforcement has already been ramped up significantly. Inspections and audits have been conducted at 49 entities, including online pharmacy warehouses, wholesalers, retailers, and slimming clinics across multiple regions. Authorities are specifically targeting issues such as unauthorised sales, improper prescription practices, and misleading marketing, with notices already served to several violators.

The regulator reiterated that patient safety remains the top priority, cautioning that misuse of such drugs without clinical oversight can lead to severe complications.

Currently, these medications are approved in India only when prescribed by specialists such as endocrinologists, internal medicine experts, and, in certain cases, cardiologists. Citizens have been strongly advised to use these drugs strictly under qualified medical guidance.
