OpenAI’s Big Bet on India: Free 1-Year ChatGPT Go Access Starting November 4

New Delhi — OpenAI on Tuesday announced a major initiative for Indian users, offering free access to ChatGPT Go for one year to anyone who signs up during a special promotional window beginning November 4.

The offer coincides with OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, scheduled for the same day, marking the company’s growing focus on India as a key market for AI adoption.

ChatGPT Go, OpenAI’s recently launched subscription plan, provides users with access to enhanced features such as higher message limits, more image generations, expanded memory, and the ability to upload larger files and images — all powered by the company’s latest GPT-5 model.

Initially rolled out in India in August after strong demand for a more affordable version of ChatGPT’s premium tools, the plan quickly gained traction. Within just a month of launch, the number of paid ChatGPT users in India more than doubled, prompting OpenAI to expand ChatGPT Go access to nearly 90 countries.

India has since emerged as ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets, with millions of students, professionals, and developers using the platform daily to learn new skills, spark creativity, and build AI-powered projects.

The new offer underscores OpenAI’s “India-first” strategy and aligns with the IndiaAI Mission, a government initiative to democratize AI access and foster innovation across sectors.

OpenAI is also collaborating with civil society organizations, educational platforms, and government programs to make its AI tools more inclusive and widely available.

Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also qualify for the free 12-month access, with additional details to be shared in the coming days.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said the company was inspired by the creativity and innovation of Indian users.

“Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go free for a year to empower more people to experience and benefit from advanced AI. We’re thrilled to see the incredible things our users in India will build and achieve with these tools,” Turley said.
