Indigenous Innovation to Power Next Phase of India’s Automotive Sector

New Delhi – India is gearing up to build a strong technological foundation for its automotive sector through indigenous innovation, the government announced on Friday.

In a major step forward, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to accelerate the development of swadeshi solutions for mobility.

The agreement will focus on joint technology development, identification of new research areas, creation of testing standards, and development of cybersecurity frameworks for the automotive industry, while also exploring new business opportunities.

Under the partnership, ICAT will work closely with automobile manufacturers to define technical requirements, while C-DAC will design and deliver indigenous solutions tailored to those needs. C-DAC will lead innovation and technology development, while ICAT will provide testing, validation, certification, and industry linkages with end-user companies.

“With this collaboration, India’s reliance on foreign technologies is expected to decline, as home-grown solutions will increasingly drive the country’s automotive innovations,” the ministry said.

The initiative aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, marking a significant milestone in shaping a future-ready, self-reliant mobility ecosystem.

The MoU was signed at the Traffic InfraTech Expo 2025 held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, in the presence of Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator (R&D in Electronics & IT), MeitY; Dr. Saurabh Dalela, Director, ICAT; Dr. P.R. Lakshmi Eswari, Centre Head, C-DAC Hyderabad; and other senior officials.
