Congress leaders in Jharkhand have announced that the INDIA bloc will organise a mega rally in New Delhi on November 1 under its “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” campaign, accusing authorities of failing to adequately address concerns over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The announcement was made at a press conference at the Congress Bhawan in Ranchi on Friday. Party leaders called for a nationwide public awareness campaign to protect democratic institutions, ensure transparency in elections and safeguard citizens’ voting rights.
The press conference was addressed by Rajya Sabha MP and Jharkhand observer for the campaign Phulo Devi Netam, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, former state Congress president Rajesh Thakur and former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay.
Congress Seeks Accountability Over Alleged Vote Theft
Phulo Devi Netam said Rahul Gandhi had raised the issue of alleged vote theft with supporting evidence and called for the concerns to be examined seriously. She said the campaign was intended to protect democracy and ensure that citizens were not deprived of their voting rights.
According to Netam, the Congress is organising meetings, press conferences and public awareness programmes at block, district and state levels to highlight alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. She added that leaders from various constituent parties of the INDIA bloc would participate in the November 1 rally in Delhi.
Netam said the rally would demonstrate the opposition alliance's collective commitment to protecting electoral rights and democratic processes.
Jharkhand Congress Demands Answers on SIR
Keshav Mahto Kamlesh said the INDIA bloc had drawn up a detailed strategy for the campaign during a meeting of its leaders in Delhi. Programmes are now being organised across the country in accordance with that plan, he said, adding that Congress leaders and workers from Jharkhand would also travel to Delhi for the rally.
He called for answers to questions surrounding alleged discrepancies in voter lists, including how they occurred and under what circumstances voters' names may have been affected during the SIR exercise. He demanded an impartial examination of the allegations and accountability for any established irregularities.
Election Commission Urged to Clarify Its Position
Former Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur said the Election Commission of India should respond to the concerns raised over the SIR process. He stressed that the accuracy and transparency of electoral rolls were essential to a functioning democracy.
Thakur said no eligible citizen should have their name wrongly deleted from the voter list or be deprived of the right to vote.
Former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay also called on the Election Commission to clarify the situation with facts. He said the constitutional body was responsible for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections and should address public concerns over the electoral process.
The Congress leaders maintained that transparency, accountability and the protection of eligible voters' rights must remain central to electoral administration. The November 1 rally is expected to serve as a platform for the INDIA bloc to press its demands over the alleged irregularities and seek answers from the election authorities.
The allegations raised by the Congress and its demand for clarification from the Election Commission formed the central focus of the press conference.
