Continuous rainfall in several parts of Nepal has pushed up water levels in major rivers flowing through North Bihar, prompting district authorities to step up monitoring and preparedness measures.
According to the daily river water level report issued by the Muzaffarpur District Emergency Operation Centre at 6 am on Friday, the Bagmati River was flowing above the danger mark, while the Gandak and Burhi Gandak rivers were also showing a rising trend.
At Kataujha, the Bagmati was recorded at 55.15 metres, marginally above its danger level of 55 metres. Although the latest reading indicated a slight decline, officials said the river remained above the danger mark and the situation was being closely watched.
The Burhi Gandak at Sikandarpur was flowing at 49.16 metres, below its danger level of 52.53 metres. However, its water level has been rising steadily, raising concerns that continued rainfall in upstream and catchment areas could result in a further increase.
At Rewaghat, the Gandak was recorded at 53.63 metres against a danger mark of 54.41 metres. While the river remained below the critical level, its rising trend has prompted authorities to maintain heightened vigilance in vulnerable areas.
Round-the-clock monitoring
Officials from the Water Resources Department, including junior engineers from the Water Discharge Division, along with personnel from the District Flood Control Room, are keeping round-the-clock watch on river levels and embankments.
The administration has asked people living close to riverbanks and in low-lying areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. Authorities are paying particular attention to flood-prone locations so that relief and rescue operations can be launched without delay if conditions worsen.
The Water Resources Department has also established a control room in Patna to monitor the flood situation across North Bihar and the Seemanchal region.
With rainfall continuing in Nepal and several rivers showing a rising trend, authorities are maintaining close surveillance to prevent any sudden deterioration in the flood situation.
