New Delhi — In a move aimed at improving access to cooking fuel, the government has announced that 5 kg LPG cylinders can now be purchased without providing address proof.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, consumers only need to show a valid ID to buy these smaller cylinders from nearby distributors. The step is particularly beneficial for migrant workers and individuals who may not have local address documentation.
The decision comes amid concerns over global energy supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials highlighted that the government is taking proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted fuel availability across the country. Since March 23, around 5.7 lakh 5 kg cylinders have already been sold, including over 71,000 units in a single day.
Authorities have reassured the public that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG, and urged people to avoid panic buying. Fuel outlets across India are operating normally, and sufficient stocks are being maintained.
To further stabilise supply, steps such as boosting domestic LPG production and running refineries at high capacity have been implemented. Priority is being given to essential sectors like households, hospitals, and critical services.
On the demand side, the government has introduced measures like extending LPG booking cycles and promoting alternatives such as PNG and electric cooking solutions. States have also been encouraged to expand access to piped natural gas connections.
Additionally, strict monitoring is underway to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Thousands of inspections have been carried out, with action taken against violators under the Essential Commodities Act.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring energy security and maintaining smooth supply chains despite global uncertainties.
