
New Delhi- Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was sworn in on Friday as the 15th Vice President of India at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath in the presence of senior leaders and dignitaries from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar were among those in attendance.
Radhakrishnan’s election to the post followed his decisive win in the vice-presidential polls, where he secured 452 first-preference votes against opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes.
Before assuming office, Radhakrishnan served as the Governor of Maharashtra. Known as a non-confrontational leader with strong RSS roots, he has been seen as a figure acceptable to both ruling and opposition benches. Following his victory, he pledged to uphold constitutional values and work for the country’s progress.
The Vice President of India also serves as the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. With his oath-taking, Radhakrishnan begins his tenure aiming to uphold the dignity of the office, ensure stability, and act as a bridge across political divides.
