Mumbai: At least one person died and nine others were injured after falling from a moving local train near Mumbra station, close to Mumbai, on Sunday, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred on a local train traveling from Kasara to CSMT, when ten passengers reportedly fell from the crowded coach near Mumbra. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) stated that one person succumbed to injuries, while the remaining nine were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa.
According to a statement by the TMC-run hospital, senior officials including local leader Sanjay Vaghule, Disaster Management Officer Yasin Tadvi, Medical Superintendent Dr. Malgaonkar, and Kalwa Police Station Inspector were present at the hospital, where doctors were working urgently to treat the injured.
An eyewitness said the train was overcrowded, forcing some passengers to hang from the doors. As the Pushpak Express, en route to Lucknow, passed by on a parallel track, several passengers were hit and thrown off the local train.
After witnessing the incident, fellow passengers alerted the Railway Protection Force (RPF), who rushed the injured to the hospital.
A resident of Diwa stated that videos of the incident began circulating on social media, showing passengers falling from the train and being rescued from the tracks, some with torn clothes and severe injuries.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar called the incident “unfortunate” and stressed the need to improve passenger safety in Mumbai’s suburban trains. He expressed hope that the railway authorities would take urgent steps.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske urged the administration to investigate the cause, questioning whether overcrowding or someone being pushed led to the accident.
Former Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare blamed the limited number of trains on the Mumbai–Kalyan route, saying commuters are forced to risk their lives due to excessive crowding and called for increasing train frequency.
NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule offered her condolences and called for better crowd management by railway authorities.
NCP (SP) leader Vidya Chavan criticized the lack of ambulances and poor conditions of Mumbai local trains. “Overcrowding is severe, and people are forced to stand outside the doors. Delays worsen the situation, risking lives,” she said.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera described the tragedy as “a stark reminder” of the Maharashtra government's failure to address chronic overcrowding and safety concerns on Mumbai’s suburban rail system.
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya called the incident unfortunate, acknowledging that infrastructure has not kept pace with population growth in areas like Thane and Dombivli. He highlighted ongoing efforts to expand metro and road networks.
Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar blamed the ruling MahaYuti government and demanded the resignation of the Railway Minister. “The horrific accident is a result of mismanagement. The city’s lifeline is turning into a death trap due to overcrowding, delays, and lack of additional trains,” he said, accusing the minister of focusing on social media rather than real issues.
He concluded, “Ordinary Mumbaikars commute daily, clinging to life on these trains. The Railway Minister must take responsibility and resign. The state government must actively push the Centre for urgent reforms in Mumbai’s local train system.”
