Five militants killed in J&K

Five militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday, police said, as clashes between civilian protesters and security personnel broke out near the encounter site.

Security forces launched a search operation in Chowgam village in the Qazigund area late Friday night after receiving information about the presence of militants. The area was cordoned off before the operation began.

According to police, the ensuing encounter resulted in the deaths of five militants. No casualties were reported among the security forces.

Tensions escalated near the encounter site after civilian protesters clashed with security personnel. Police said two protesters sustained firearm injuries during the clashes.

Authorities also suspended train services between Srinagar and Banihal, which pass through the Qazigund area, as a precautionary measure following the security operation.

Mobile internet services were also suspended across Kulgam district.

The restrictions and disruption to transport were aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions and maintaining security in the area as authorities continued operations following the encounter.

Security operations and temporary communication restrictions have periodically been imposed in parts of Jammu and Kashmir following militant encounters, particularly where there are concerns about protests or possible attempts to disrupt security operations.
