The issue of migrant workers reported missing from Jharkhand's Gumla district is not merely a matter of official records but a serious concern for families facing uncertainty over their livelihoods and future, Mission Badlav said while seeking government intervention.
A delegation of the organisation, led by district secretary Sayyeda Khatoon, city president Jyoti Verma, city secretary Jyoti Gloria Kujur, Chandan Kumar, Devanarayan and Shubham Kumar, submitted a memorandum to the Gumla Deputy Commissioner, outlining a series of demands concerning missing workers and their families.
Mission Badlav called for the government to make an official list of all missing workers public and launch dedicated search operations for each case within a clearly defined timeframe.
The organisation also demanded that the families of missing workers be regularly provided written updates on investigations and action taken in their cases. It sought coordination with police and administrative authorities in other states for inter-state search operations wherever workers may have gone missing.
The memorandum called for immediate financial assistance and ration support for affected families. It also sought scholarships and educational assistance for children of missing workers so that their studies are not disrupted.
Mission Badlav further demanded special assistance for elderly, sick, disabled and other dependent members of affected families and urged the administration to ensure that eligible families are linked with all relevant government welfare schemes.
The organisation also called for the appointment of a nodal officer for each affected family so that family members do not have to repeatedly visit different government offices to seek information or assistance.
It demanded that if a worker's death or serious condition is confirmed, the process for providing statutory assistance and compensation to the eligible family should be initiated without delay.
The organisation further sought regular reviews of all missing-worker cases and preparation of progress reports. It said a consolidated report on the cases should also be placed before the state government and the Labour Minister.
Mission Badlav said the responsibility of the government should extend beyond locating missing workers to addressing the immediate needs of the families left behind.
It said families whose principal earning member is missing can face serious difficulties related to food, employment, healthcare and children's education, and urged the authorities to ensure accountability in every case, set timelines for action and provide immediate assistance to affected families.
