Jharkhand HC stays cancellation of medical student's admission over EWS certificate issue

The Jharkhand High Court has granted interim relief to a medical student whose admission to Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad was cancelled over an issue concerning the online submission of an EWS certificate.

The court has stayed, for the time being, the order cancelling the admission of student S. Roy after the college cited the non-uploading of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificate during the online admission process.

During the hearing, advocate Sachin Kumar, appearing for the student, told the court that the student had submitted the EWS certificate to the college on September 2, 2026, at the time of admission. The college had accepted the certificate, the court was informed.

However, the student's admission was cancelled on September 11 on the ground that the certificate had not been uploaded through the online process.

The student subsequently challenged the cancellation before the High Court.

Counsel for the petitioner argued that once the EWS certificate had been physically submitted and accepted by the college at the time of admission, cancellation of the admission solely because it was not uploaded online was not justified.

After hearing the submissions, the High Court stayed the order cancelling the student's admission, providing interim protection to the petitioner.

The student's admission status will now depend on the further proceedings and the High Court's subsequent orders in the case.
