Former Jharkhand MLA Suryasingh Besra Declared ‘Adivasi Dharmguru’ at Chandrapur Tribal Convention

Former Jharkhand MLA and founder of the ‘Darbar’ organisation Suryasingh Besra was unanimously declared ‘Adivasi Dharmguru’ at a national tribal convention held in Chimur, Chandrapur district of Maharashtra.

The convention, chaired by Vishwanath Wakde, brought together more than 1,000 delegates from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and several other states. Besra attended the gathering as the chief guest, while Prem Shahi Munda and Bhuvan Singh Korram were present as special guests.

The convention focused on issues concerning the rights of tribal communities, preservation of cultural identity and their social and political concerns. Participants also discussed the need to bring tribal organisations from different parts of the country onto a common platform.

Five organisations were assigned responsibilities to coordinate efforts aimed at bringing tribal communities together and advancing a nationwide tribal awakening campaign. They include Darbar, the Coordination Committee of Adivasi Political Parties, the National Tribal Youth and Students Federation, the National Tribal Advisory Council and the National Tribal Women's Organisation.

According to the organisers, these organisations will work towards strengthening tribal cultural identity, raising issues related to social and political rights and improving coordination among tribal groups and organisations across different states.

The convention also decided to organise a National Tribal Convention in New Delhi in December. A coordinating body representing the 28 states and eight Union Territories will be nominated for the proposed event.

The Delhi convention is expected to discuss key demands of tribal communities and the proposed organisational framework in greater detail. The organisers also plan to present the resolutions and demands emerging from the gathering before the Central government.

The development gives Besra a more prominent organisational role within the network of tribal groups participating in the initiative, although the title ‘Adivasi Dharmguru’ is a designation conferred by the organisers and does not represent an official government position.
