Babulal Marandi Raises Tribal Population Concerns, Targets Congress and Jharkhand Government

Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi on Sunday targeted the Congress and the state government over issues concerning tribal communities, including the reported decline in the tribal population, alleged infiltration from Bangladesh and concerns over tribal land.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office in Ranchi, Marandi also spoke about the Tribal Unity Maha Jutan held in the city and alleged that the interests and rights of tribal communities were being neglected.

Marandi accused the Congress of failing tribal communities since Independence. Referring to the history of the movement for a separate Jharkhand state, he alleged that the party's approach towards tribal rights and protection of tribal land had repeatedly come under question.

‘Tribal population has declined significantly’

Citing Census figures, Marandi said the tribal population in the Jharkhand region accounted for around 35.38 per cent of the total population in 1951, but had fallen to 26.20 per cent by 2011.

He also referred to Santhal Pargana, claiming that the tribal population there declined from around 44.67 per cent in 1951 to 28.1 per cent in 2011.

Marandi said the trend was a matter of serious concern for Jharkhand's tribal communities. He warned that if the trend continued, it could create significant social and demographic challenges for the state's indigenous population in the years ahead.

Allegations over illegal infiltration

The BJP leader also raised allegations of infiltration from Bangladesh in parts of Santhal Pargana. He claimed that illegal migration was affecting tribal land and the rights of local communities.

Marandi accused the state government of failing to take effective action on the issue, alleging that political considerations and vote-bank politics were influencing the government's approach.

The allegations have been a politically sensitive issue in Jharkhand, with different political parties taking contrasting positions on the extent and impact of alleged infiltration.

Questions over Tribal Unity Maha Jutan

Marandi also criticised the Tribal Unity Maha Jutan organised in Ranchi. He targeted the Congress and Christian missionaries, alleging that tribal people were being pressured to participate in the gathering.

Referring to an alleged audio recording, he claimed that people were being warned of a fine if they did not attend the rally. The authenticity and context of the alleged audio have not been independently established.

Pakur tribal land issue raised

Marandi also referred to a letter reportedly sent by the Tribal Welfare Committee of Pakur to the President, Prime Minister, Election Commission and Jharkhand Chief Minister.

According to Marandi, the letter raised allegations of illegal occupation and construction on tribal land. He claimed that despite the issue being brought to the attention of the authorities, no concrete action had been taken so far.

He urged the state government to investigate the allegations and take effective measures to protect tribal land and safeguard the constitutional and legal rights of tribal communities.

Marandi's remarks are likely to add to the ongoing political debate in Jharkhand over tribal demographics, land rights, migration and the protection of indigenous communities. The claims made at the press conference, however, remain allegations and would require verification by the relevant authorities.
