Ten workers were reportedly injured after a boiler exploded at Shriram Power Steel Private Limited on the Ara-Sarubeda Road in Ramgarh district on Sunday. Two of the injured workers are said to be in critical condition and have been referred to RIMS in Ranchi, while eight others are undergoing treatment at Hope Hospital on Ranchi Road.
The incident has once again raised questions over safety arrangements at factories operating in the district, particularly in view of earlier accidents reported at the same plant.
According to information available, the workers were carrying out their duties inside the factory when the boiler suddenly exploded. Ten workers sustained burn injuries in the incident. The condition of two workers was reportedly serious, following which they were referred to Ranchi for specialised treatment.
The latest accident comes months after two workers reportedly died in an incident at the same factory. Following that incident, a letter signed in the presence of public representatives and district administration officials was reportedly handed over to the factory management, assuring that necessary safety measures would be followed to protect workers.
However, Sunday's boiler blast has once again brought the issue of workplace safety into focus.
People familiar with industrial operations in the area have alleged that some factories continue to operate without adequately complying with prescribed safety standards. They have also raised concerns over the age and condition of boilers being used in some industrial units in the district.
The incident has also revived questions over earlier inquiries into industrial accidents. In a previous boiler-related accident at Jharkhand Ispat factory, workers were reportedly injured and some lost their lives. Labour Minister Sanjay Yadav had visited the site and announced that action would be taken against the factory and that the inquiry report would be made public. However, according to local residents, the report has not yet been made public.
Questions are now being raised over the functioning of inquiry committees constituted after such incidents. Locals say that although committees are formed and reports are submitted to the district administration, the findings are often not made public, leaving people uncertain about whether corrective measures have actually been implemented.
There is also discussion among local residents about the powers available to the district administration to take action against factories that allegedly fail to comply with safety and labour regulations. Some people familiar with the matter claim that authorities can issue notices and reminders and, under certain circumstances, order the closure of a factory for up to three months.
However, the exact legal provisions and whether they apply to the present case can only be clarified by the district administration and the competent authorities.
The latest incident has once again put the spotlight on industrial safety in Ramgarh, with workers and local residents seeking strict enforcement of safety norms and greater transparency in investigations into factory accidents.
