1,060 Kg of Suspected Peda Destroyed in Food Safety Crackdown During Shravani Mela

Deoghar: As part of the ongoing Rajkiya Shravani Mela 2026, the Food Safety Department carried out a special inspection drive in the Ghormara area to ensure that pilgrims are served safe, hygienic and quality food. The campaign was conducted by teams constituted under the direction of Deputy Commissioner Saurabh Kumar Bhuvaniya.During the drive, officials inspected Maa Durga Peda Bhandar, Sandeep Peda Shop, Pihu Peda Bhandar and Ashish Fast Food. The inspection focused on hygiene, food quality, preparation and storage practices, as well as verification of food safety licences and related records. Shop owners were directed to strictly comply with food safety norms and maintain prescribed standards.As part of the enforcement action, 1,060 kilograms of suspected peda seized from Omji Peda Bhandar the previous night was destroyed with the help of a JCB machine in the presence of departmental officials. The department said the action was taken to ensure that the seized food items could not be reintroduced into the market under any circumstances.
The Food Safety Department stated that inspection drives will continue throughout the Shravani Mela to ensure the quality and safety of food sold to devotees. Strict legal action will be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 against anyone found manufacturing, storing or selling adulterated, substandard or unsafe food products.The department has urged all food business operators to obtain valid licences or registrations, maintain hygiene and sell only standard-compliant food products. Pilgrims and members of the public have also been requested to immediately report any suspected adulterated or unsafe food to the Food Safety Department for prompt action.
