Jharkhand Missing Girl Case: Tooth DNA Matches Pushpa Kumari, High Court Seeks Investigation Status Report

Ranchi: In a significant development in the nearly 11-month-old disappearance case of 18-year-old Pushpa Kumari from Jharkhand's Bokaro district, DNA extracted from a tooth of the recovered skeletal remains has matched Pushpa’s DNA profile, according to a report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Kolkata.

The findings were presented before the Jharkhand High Court on Thursday during the hearing of the case. However, the forensic report noted that DNA matching of the entire skeleton with Pushpa’s parents has not yet been completed.

Pushpa, a resident of the Pindrajora police station area in Bokaro, went missing on July 31, 2025. After months of unsuccessful efforts to trace her, her mother, Rekha Devi, approached the Jharkhand High Court by filing a habeas corpus petition seeking her daughter's recovery.

During the investigation, police arrested Dinesh Kumar Mahto based on technical evidence and interrogation. According to investigators, the accused confessed to murdering Pushpa, following which a human skeleton was recovered from a location identified by him.

Despite the police's claim, Pushpa’s family has consistently maintained that the recovered skeletal remains do not belong to her. In light of the dispute, the High Court had directed that DNA samples from the skeleton and Pushpa’s family be sent to the CFSL in Kolkata for forensic examination.

During Thursday’s hearing, members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) were also present before the court as the forensic findings were placed on record.

The High Court has now sought a status report on the proceedings pending before the trial court in connection with the case. It also asked the Jharkhand government to inform the court about the action taken against police officials allegedly found negligent during the investigation.

Additionally, the court directed the police to complete the inquest (panchnama) of the recovered skeleton and carry out all remaining legal formalities.

The court was informed that Pushpa’s family continues to reject the claim that the recovered remains are those of their daughter.

Observing that further action must be guided strictly by scientific evidence and legal procedures, the High Court said the matter would continue to be heard.
