Thunderstorm alert across Jharkhand as monsoon conditions strengthen

Jamshedpur: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm and lightning alert for several districts of Jharkhand over the next six days, with gusty winds and intermittent rainfall expected as conditions become increasingly favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon.

According to the latest forecast, isolated places in the northeastern districts of Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, Dumka, Deoghar and Jamtara, along with the southern districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan, are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph on June 8.

The zone of weather activity is expected to shift towards the southern and adjoining central parts of the state on June 9, affecting Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Gumla and Khunti districts. Similar weather conditions are likely to persist across most parts of Jharkhand on June 10, except a few northwestern districts.
Meteorologists have indicated that June 11 may witness the most vigorous weather activity of the week. Isolated areas over northeastern and adjoining central Jharkhand, including Dhanbad, Bokaro and Koderma, could experience strong winds of 50-60 kmph accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Other districts are expected to witness winds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph.

Thunderstorm and lightning activity, coupled with spells of rain, are likely to continue across the state on June 12 and 13.

Weather experts attributed the changing conditions to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas extending between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level.

A trough stretching from East Uttar Pradesh to Telangana across Chhattisgarh is also persisting, enhancing moisture flow and triggering thunderstorm development over eastern India.

The anticipated rainfall is expected to bring respite from the oppressive heat and humidity that have prevailed across several districts in recent days.

Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under isolated trees, and stay away from water bodies and open fields during lightning activity.

"The weather has been extremely humid over the past week, especially during the afternoon hours. A sustained spell of rain will not only lower temperatures but also make day-to-day activities much more comfortable," said Sandeep Verma, a resident of Bistupur.

"We have already seen a few evening showers recently, and the difference has been noticeable. If the forecast materialises, it will be a welcome relief for people struggling with the heat and sticky conditions," said Ritu Mishra, a resident of Kadma.

Monsoon Update

The southwest monsoon continued its advance on June 7, covering additional parts of the west-central and northeastern Bay of Bengal, the entire states of Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, and parts of Tripura, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to meteorologists, conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further during the next two to three days into additional parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, and more areas of the Bay of Bengal and northeastern India.

For Jharkhand, the strengthening monsoon flow combined with favourable synoptic conditions is expected to boost rainfall activity over the coming days, signalling the gradual arrival of the rainy season across the state.

The IMD has urged residents to keep track of official weather bulletins, particularly in districts under thunderstorm and lightning alerts, as localised severe weather events can develop rapidly during the monsoon transition phase.
