Leopard scare at Tatanagar railway yard

Jamshedpur: Panic gripped the Tatanagar Railway Yard after reports emerged of a leopard-like wild animal being spotted within the premises.

A video, now widely circulating on social media, appears to show a wild animal moving through dense bushes inside the yard, triggering alarm among railway employees and residents in nearby areas.

Taking the matter seriously, the Tatanagar railway administration has formally written to Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saba Alam Ansari, sharing the viral footage and urging the forest department to launch an immediate rescue and verification operation.

The railway yard is considered a highly sensitive zone, with constant movement of railway staff and round-the-clock shunting operations, heightening concerns over safety.

Following the alert, the forest department swiftly mobilised its team.

On the instructions of the DFO, a specialised team led by researcher Imran and forester Mithun has been deployed to the site.

The team has begun intensive surveillance of the area and is preparing to install trap cameras to confirm the animal’s presence and monitor its movement.

Fear has spread among residents living in railway colonies and adjoining neighbourhoods, especially as large parts of the yard are surrounded by overgrown vegetation and isolated stretches that could provide cover for a wild predator.

In response, railway authorities and the forest department have jointly appealed to the public to remain vigilant.

Officials have advised people to avoid walking alone in deserted areas at night, not leave children unattended outdoors, and refrain from approaching or attempting to film any wild animal.

Instead, residents have been urged to immediately inform the authorities if they notice any suspicious movement.

Security patrols and monitoring across the railway yard have been intensified.

Officials said the exact nature of the threat will become clear only after the forest department completes its investigation and reviews footage from the trap cameras.

“Public safety remains our top priority. We are closely monitoring the situation and request everyone to stay alert and cooperate with the authorities,” an official said.
