Tempest over Jharkhand: 70 Kmph storm threat puts nine districts on orange alert

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand braces for a volatile turn in weather today as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues an Orange Alert across nine districts, warning of powerful thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 Kmph.

The alert covers key regions including Ranchi and Khunti, where atmospheric instability is expected to trigger intense convective activity through the day.

According to the latest forecast, parts of central and adjoining north-eastern Jharkhand may witness isolated hailstorms, accompanied by moderate rainfall and strong winds ranging between 40–50 kmph, with occasional higher gusts.

The sudden shift in weather is likely to bring a noticeable dip in daytime temperatures, offering brief relief from the prevailing heat, even as it raises concerns over safety and infrastructure.

Met authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly in vulnerable rural and semi-urban pockets, where lightning strikes and high-speed winds pose a significant risk.

Farmers have also been advised to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops, as hail and strong winds could cause localized damage.

This spell of turbulent weather is part of a broader pattern impacting eastern India over the next 48–72 hours, as changing wind systems and moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal intensify weather conditions across the region.
