Ranchi: In a major relief for general category students, the Jharkhand government has approved a substantial hike in pre- and post-matric scholarships for those studying in government schools. The decision, approved by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in his capacity as Minister for School Education and Literacy, will increase the scholarship amount two to three times, benefiting thousands of students who previously received minimal aid.
As per the revised structure, students of Classes 9 and 10 will now receive ?450 instead of ?150, while students of Classes 11 and 12 will get ?500 in place of ?230. Official estimates suggest that nearly 58,000 students across the state will benefit from the move, which will put an additional financial burden of about ?27 crore on the state exchequer. The enhanced amount is expected to be disbursed within the current financial year.
The Mukhyamantri Vishesh Chhatravriti Yojana, launched in 2021, was aimed at supporting general category students, as those belonging to SC, ST, and OBC communities already receive scholarships through the Welfare Department. Officials said the revised rates will provide meaningful financial support to students pursuing education in government institutions.
The Directorate of Secondary Education will monitor the disbursement process, which will be carried out through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) directly into students’ bank accounts to ensure transparency and efficiency.
