Bhojpuri actress Aamrapali Dubey believes transforming the perception of Bhojpuri cinema is a collective responsibility and requires sustained efforts from actors, filmmakers and the wider industry.
Aamrapali, who is currently among the contestants on Salman Khan-hosted ‘Bigg Boss 20’, spoke about the changing landscape of Bhojpuri cinema during an exclusive interaction with IANS.
Responding to a question on whether actors, filmmakers or the entire industry should take responsibility for improving Bhojpuri cinema’s mainstream image, the actress said everyone has been working towards that goal for several years.
“All of us have been trying to do this for the last few years,” Aamrapali told IANS.
She pointed to the increasing number of Bhojpuri films receiving U/A certification as an important sign of change. According to the actress, this shift has helped the industry move away from a stigma that had previously been associated with Bhojpuri cinema.
“Most of the films being made are now receiving U/A certification, and that is a big development for the Bhojpuri industry. This was not the case earlier, and because of that, there was a stigma attached to the name of the industry,” she said.
Aamrapali also highlighted the changing audience for Bhojpuri films, saying that families are increasingly watching such movies at home and that women are also engaging with the content.
“But over the last few years, U/A-certified films are being made, people are watching them at home, and women are enjoying them as well,” she added.
The actress acknowledged that changing a long-standing public perception cannot happen overnight. She described Bhojpuri cinema as being in a transition phase and expressed confidence that the industry would eventually reach a much wider audience.
“So, we have moved in this direction and started working towards changing the perception. It takes time to bring about a change. Our industry is currently in a transition phase. The transition will be completed very soon, and people will watch and enjoy Bhojpuri films on a much larger scale,” Aamrapali said.
Her comments come at a time when Bhojpuri cinema continues to command a substantial regional audience while also seeking greater acceptance beyond its traditional market. The actress’s emphasis on collective responsibility reflects the broader challenge of balancing commercial success with content that can appeal to a wider and more diverse audience.
