India’s Auto Retail Sales Hit Record High in FY26, Near 3-Crore Milestone

New Delhi— India’s automobile retail sector posted a historic performance in FY26, clocking total sales of 2.96 crore units — the highest ever — and inching closer to the significant 3-crore annual mark, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.

The industry recorded a robust 13.30% year-on-year growth, with five out of six vehicle segments achieving record-breaking annual sales. Calling it a landmark year, FADA President C S Vigneshwar said the growth was “structurally sound,” driven by improved affordability, rising mobility needs across both rural and urban markets, and a broader mix of vehicle technologies.

Two-wheelers led the recovery story, surpassing their pre-pandemic peak with over 2.14 crore units sold, growing 13.40%. This rebound was supported by better rural cash flows, affordability gains, and a wider product range catering to diverse buyers.

Passenger vehicles also hit a new high, crossing 47 lakh units with a 13% growth rate. Demand was fueled by new model launches, rapid urbanisation, and increasing consumer preference for SUVs and alternative fuel options.

Tractors emerged as the standout performer of the year, crossing the 10-lakh mark for the first time with an impressive 18.95% growth. This surge reflects strong agricultural conditions, including a good monsoon and improved farm income.

Commercial vehicles registered their best-ever performance as well, exceeding 10 lakh units with 11.74% growth, driven by infrastructure expansion and rising freight demand. Meanwhile, three-wheelers continued their upward trajectory, achieving their third consecutive record year with 11.68% growth — with electric vehicles now contributing over 60% of sales in this segment.

Construction equipment was the only category to see a decline, dropping 11.70% due to project delays and a high base effect.

A key catalyst behind this growth was the implementation of GST 2.0, which reduced the effective tax burden on mass-market vehicles, improving affordability at a time when consumer demand was already strengthening.

Rural markets continued to close the gap with urban demand. Overall rural retail grew 13.05%, nearly matching urban growth of 13.62%. Notably, rural demand for passenger vehicles outpaced urban areas significantly.

Looking ahead, the outlook for April remains cautiously optimistic. Around 50.56% of dealers expect growth, while 40.15% foresee stable sales — indicating a natural cooling phase after a record-breaking March, rather than any major slowdown.
