Gandhinagar: Surat has strengthened its position as a major global trade hub, registering exports worth $10.55 billion (approximately Rs 95,710 crore) in the financial year 2024–25.
Renowned for its diamond cutting and polishing industry, silk sarees, and textile manufacturing, Surat remains a cornerstone of Gujarat’s export-driven economy. The state contributed more than 27 per cent of India’s total exports during the same period, amounting to Rs 9.83 lakh crore.
The city processes nearly 90 per cent of the world’s diamonds, with the gems and jewellery segment accounting for about 70 per cent of Surat’s total outbound shipments. This dominance has cemented its global reputation in the diamond value chain.
Beyond diamonds, Surat has diversified into sectors such as human-made fibres, organic chemicals, mechanical machinery, technical textiles, and other fabric-based products. This expanding industrial portfolio has enhanced the city’s integration into global supply chains.
The United States is Surat’s largest export destination, absorbing around 32 per cent of shipments. It is followed by Hong Kong at 18 per cent and United Arab Emirates at 14 per cent. Trade engagement is also growing with Belgium, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, reflecting broader market diversification.
To further boost regional growth, the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) – South Gujarat is scheduled to be held in Surat in April. The conference will cover districts including Bharuch, Dang, Navsari, Surat, Tapi, and Valsad, with a focus on sectors such as chemicals and petrochemicals, textiles and garments, gems and jewellery, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food processing.
The event aims to link local MSMEs with international markets, reinforcing initiatives such as ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Local for Global.’ In the backdrop of evolving trade agreements between India and major economies including the European Union and the US, South Gujarat is being positioned as a strategic investment destination.
With its robust manufacturing ecosystem, strategic coastal location, and developed infrastructure, Surat is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s export-led growth trajectory.
