Sensex plunges 467 points on weak rupee; Nifty loses 151 points

Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Monday, with the benchmark Sensex falling 467 points and the Nifty50 declining 151 points, amid a weak rupee and subdued global market sentiment.

The Indian rupee touched a fresh record low of 72.67 against the US dollar during the day, weighing on investor sentiment. Global markets also remained under pressure amid concerns that the US could impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports.

Heavy selling was witnessed across banking, automobile, and oil and gas stocks.

The Nifty50 provisionally closed at 11,438.10, down 151 points or 1.30 per cent from its previous close of 11,589.10.

The BSE Sensex closed at 37,922.17, falling 467.65 points or 1.22 per cent from Friday's close of 38,389.82.

The Sensex opened at 38,348.39 and touched an intraday high of 38,354.52 and a low of 37,882.83.
