Indian naval ship calls at Myanmar port

Indian Navy warship INS Khanjar has arrived at Yangon Port in Myanmar, highlighting the growing maritime cooperation and friendly relations between India and Myanmar.

The naval vessel reached Yangon on Saturday and was scheduled to remain in Myanmar for three days, according to a report in an official Myanmar newspaper.

INS Khanjar, bearing the pennant number P-47, is a Khukri-class missile corvette operated by the Indian Navy. The 1,350-tonne warship is approximately 91 metres long and can achieve speeds of more than 25 knots.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy in October 1991, the vessel has played a role in India’s maritime security operations and naval engagement with friendly countries.

The visit is significant in the context of India and Myanmar’s longstanding maritime relationship. Naval visits such as these provide opportunities for professional exchanges, goodwill activities and greater coordination between the two countries’ maritime forces.

India and Myanmar share a strategically important maritime neighbourhood in the Bay of Bengal, making regular naval engagement particularly relevant to regional security and cooperation.

The arrival of INS Khanjar in Yangon therefore served not only as a goodwill visit but also as another step towards strengthening defence and maritime ties between the two neighbouring countries.
