Cyprus President Pushes for Stronger EU-India Partnership Amid Global Challenges

New Delhi: Nikos Christodoulides on Friday stressed the importance of strengthening ties between the European Union and India, saying the relationship is rapidly expanding beyond trade into a broader strategic partnership amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty.

Addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after bilateral talks in New Delhi, the Cypriot President said the evolving global landscape makes deeper cooperation between India and the EU more essential than ever.

Christodoulides said the partnership is now being shaped not only by economic interests but also by shared responsibilities, mutual trust, and a common commitment to global stability, resilience, and prosperity.

He noted that India and Europe have strong reasons to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as security, trade, technology, innovation, and connectivity.

Highlighting the historical bond between the two nations, the Cyprus President said relations between Cyprus and India are rooted in shared democratic values and common struggles for freedom and self-determination.

According to him, both countries continue to strengthen ties through their commitment to peace, democracy, and international law, especially at a time when the world is becoming increasingly fragmented.

Christodoulides also underlined that improving EU-India relations remains a major priority during Cyprus’s Presidency of the European Union.

He said Cyprus is well-positioned to act as a stable and trusted bridge connecting India with Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the wider Middle East region.

Speaking about the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the Cypriot President described it as a “visionary initiative” that reflects the growing importance of reliable connectivity linking the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.

He added that Cyprus, due to its strategic geographical location at the crossroads of three continents, is prepared to actively contribute to the development of the corridor and strengthen regional connectivity efforts.
