New Delhi – Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on Monday emphasised that maritime security and regional stability remain central to the relationship between India and Seychelles, highlighting the strategic importance of their partnership as key Indian Ocean nations.
Addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Herminie said economic cooperation and development support were major aspects of their discussions. He noted that both countries explored ways to advance priority projects through development cooperation tools, including project-based assistance and lines of credit.
Expressing optimism about his India visit, Herminie said it would further strengthen bilateral ties and produce tangible benefits for the people of both nations.
He underlined that India and Seychelles’ collaboration in maritime surveillance, security, and defence capacity building continues to play a crucial role in tackling transnational crimes, piracy, and other maritime threats in the region.
Herminie said both leaders reaffirmed their shared responsibility to ensure safety, stability, and lawful activities in the western Indian Ocean. He added that the partnership remains vital for safeguarding critical maritime interests and maintaining regional security.
The Seychelles President also highlighted discussions on infrastructure development and investment promotion as key drivers of economic resilience and inclusive growth. He said special focus was placed on sustainable transportation, climate-resilient infrastructure, electric mobility solutions, and environmentally friendly public transport systems.
Describing his visit as a reflection of the strong friendship and mutual respect between the two countries, Herminie invited Prime Minister Modi to attend Seychelles’ 50th Independence anniversary celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
He pointed out that Seychelles and India will celebrate the golden jubilee of their diplomatic relations in June, coinciding with Seychelles’ 50 years of independence. Herminie said the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the partnership and shape future cooperation.
During their meeting, Herminie and Prime Minister Modi conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to building a forward-looking partnership focused on delivering practical outcomes. The two leaders also discussed their shared vision for cooperation over the next five years, identifying priority sectors to ensure that bilateral engagement remains aligned with their national development goals.
