PM Modi Calls for Unified SCO Action Against Terrorism, Urges Dialogue to Resolve Conflicts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states to adopt a united and uncompromising approach to dismantle the global ecosystem that sustains terrorism and its financing.

Addressing the annual SCO summit in the Kyrgyz capital, Modi described terrorism as one of the biggest challenges to regional peace and security and stressed that the threat could only be addressed through collective and decisive action.

“We must dismantle the entire ecosystem of terrorism as well as its financing,” Modi said, urging SCO members to speak in one voice against terrorism and avoid any double standards in dealing with the menace.

The Prime Minister’s remarks assume significance in view of India’s consistent push for stronger international action against cross-border terrorism and countries, organisations or networks that provide support, funding or safe havens to terrorist groups.

Modi also made it clear that conflicts and wars cannot offer a lasting answer to international disputes. He advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward, saying that there is no real solution to conflicts on the battlefield.

On connectivity, Modi said India supports projects that link markets, boost trade and open up new avenues for economic growth. At the same time, he stressed that connectivity initiatives must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country.

The remark is particularly significant in the context of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, parts of which have faced concerns from India over sovereignty and territorial issues.

Modi described the SCO as a platform that brings together countries with diverse civilisations, cultures and perspectives. He said India’s approach to the organisation is centred on three key pillars — security, connectivity and opportunity.

The Prime Minister’s address underlined India’s broader vision of making the SCO a more effective platform for regional cooperation while ensuring that security challenges, particularly terrorism, are addressed collectively.

The summit comes at a time when the SCO is seeking to strengthen cooperation among its member states on security, trade, connectivity and economic development. For India, the grouping also provides an important forum for engaging with Central Asian countries and major regional powers.
