Parliament Session Ends, But ‘Monkey’ Protest Heats Up Politics on Final Day

The Monsoon Session of Parliament may have ended, but the political confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition continued to dominate the final day, with a protest outside the House featuring toy monkeys and a sharp political slogan drawing attention.

Before the proceedings were adjourned sine die, BJP MPs staged a demonstration at the steps of Makar Dwar, targeting the Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Opposition MPs, including those from the Congress, soon responded with a counter-protest.

Led by Congress MP Pawan Khera, the Opposition MPs were seen carrying toy monkeys during their demonstration. They raised the slogan, “56-inch ka chhota bandar, jaldi aao Sadan ke andar,” turning the toy into a political symbol aimed at taking a swipe at the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The reference to “56 inches” was a political dig at a phrase that has long been associated with Prime Minister Modi and has frequently been used by both supporters and opponents in political discourse.

Toy monkey becomes political symbol

The toy monkey was used by the Opposition as a visual element of its protest rather than merely as a prop. Through the combination of the slogan and the toy, Opposition MPs attempted to convey their criticism of the government and underline their political messaging on the final day of the session.

The unusual nature of the protest also drew attention to the increasingly confrontational style of political demonstrations that has become a recurring feature of parliamentary sessions.

Ruling party and Opposition remain locked in confrontation

The Monsoon Session witnessed repeated clashes between the government and Opposition over a range of political issues. Opposition parties accused the government of avoiding discussions on issues they considered important, while the ruling side repeatedly blamed Opposition protests and disruptions for affecting the functioning of Parliament.

The same political friction was visible on the final day. The BJP’s demonstration was followed by the Opposition’s counter-protest, with both sides using slogans and symbolic gestures to attack each other.

Session ends, political battle continues

With the Lok Sabha adjourned sine die, the Monsoon Session formally came to an end. However, the demonstrations on the final day highlighted that the political contest between the government and Opposition is unlikely to ease outside Parliament.

The toy monkey, the “56-inch” slogan and the competing demonstrations provided an unusual ending to the session, but behind the theatrics was the same political divide that had characterised much of the proceedings.

The final-day protest once again showed how parliamentary politics is increasingly extending beyond the floor of the House, with symbolism, slogans and visual demonstrations becoming an important part of the political battle.
