Ranchi Administration Appeals to Students to Avoid Illegal Protests Ahead of Assembly Gherao

The Ranchi district administration has appealed to students to maintain peace and avoid participating in any aggressive or unlawful protest ahead of a proposed Assembly gherao on August 10, 2026.

According to the administration, it has received information that some student organisations are planning to stage a protest near the Jharkhand Assembly. In view of the proposed demonstration, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar), Ranchi, has imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), corresponding to the earlier Section 144 of the CrPC.

The restrictions are applicable within a 750-metre radius of the new Jharkhand Assembly complex, except for the premises of the Jharkhand High Court in Ranchi. As a result, demonstrations, sit-ins and similar protest activities in the restricted area have been declared unlawful.

In an appeal addressed to students, the administration urged them not to participate in any form of aggressive protest. It said such activities could create law-and-order problems and potentially have serious consequences for students' education, careers and future prospects.

The administration warned that students found involved in violent or unlawful activities could face legal action. Such action, it said, could affect their academic records and future employment opportunities.

Pointing out that police verification is required for many jobs, the administration said that any adverse record could create difficulties not only in government employment but also while seeking jobs or contracts in private companies.

The administration urged students to prioritise their education and future and use peaceful and lawful means to raise their grievances.

“If you have any grievance, express it peacefully rather than resorting to aggression,” the administration said in its message.

Describing students as the future pillars of the nation and the state, the administration appealed to them to remain calm, maintain peace and focus on their goals. It also urged students not to be influenced by provocation and to follow the prescribed legal process while raising their demands.
