India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-4 Ballistic Missile, Strengthening Strategic Deterrence

New Delhi: India on Thursday successfully conducted a test launch of the Agni-4 medium-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, marking another milestone in the country's strategic defence capabilities.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the test was carried out under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), with all operational and technical parameters meeting the desired objectives.

"The launch validated all operational and technical parameters. The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command," a Defence Ministry official said.

The Agni-4 is part of India's family of nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface ballistic missiles designed to strengthen the country's strategic deterrence. The latest trial further confirms the missile's operational readiness and reliability.

The successful launch follows a series of recent advances in India's missile programme. In April 2024, the Strategic Forces Command and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested the new-generation Agni-Prime ballistic missile.

More recently, on June 15 this year, the DRDO successfully tested the indigenously developed Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. The missile met all mission objectives, validating critical technologies and demonstrating India's growing long-range precision strike capability.

The LRLACM test was monitored by senior DRDO officials, representatives of the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force, along with Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh. Following the successful trial, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO team and industry partners for their contribution to strengthening India's indigenous defence capabilities.
