Jharkhand Government Opens Talks with Protesting Students, CM Meeting Offer Declined

Ranchi: The Jharkhand government has initiated efforts to open a dialogue with students protesting over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations. A day after Chief Minister Hemant Soren assured that the government was treating the issue with seriousness and sensitivity, officials reached the protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium on Wednesday with a proposal for talks.

Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) met student representatives and conveyed an invitation from the Chief Minister for a meeting at the Chief Minister's residence. The government proposed that five student representatives attend the discussion to help find a resolution through dialogue.

However, the protesting students rejected the invitation, insisting that the Chief Minister should visit the protest site instead of asking them to come to his residence. They argued that the agitation represents the concerns of lakhs of aspirants across Jharkhand and cannot be confined to a handful of representatives.

The students have been staging a sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium for the past 12 days, demanding a fair investigation into alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), and other recruitment agencies. They are also seeking strict action against those responsible and comprehensive reforms to ensure transparency in future recruitment processes.

According to the administration, the government's intention is to understand the students' grievances and work towards a mutually acceptable solution. The outreach comes amid mounting pressure over allegations of paper leaks and recruitment-related irregularities.

The students, however, maintained that merely inviting representatives for a meeting would not address their concerns. They said the government must demonstrate its commitment by holding discussions at the protest venue and providing concrete assurances on their demands.

Despite the government's initiative, the indefinite protest will continue, the students said, adding that the movement is aimed not only at securing justice for current aspirants but also at safeguarding the future of upcoming generations of candidates.

While both sides have expressed willingness for dialogue, differences remain over the venue and format of the talks. The outcome of the government's latest outreach is now being closely watched as efforts continue to break the deadlock.
