PM Modi Hails Launch of India’s First Hydrogen Train as a Milestone in Green Mobility

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train as a landmark achievement for the country, saying it marks an important step towards self-reliance, technological innovation and sustainable development.

Sharing his message on X ahead of the inauguration, the Prime Minister said India was on the verge of realising its long-awaited dream of introducing its first hydrogen train.

"Today, the dream of India receiving its first hydrogen train is about to come true. This is a very significant day in the direction of a self-reliant India and sustainable development. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone associated with this," he wrote.

The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit verse, emphasising the importance of determination and wholehearted commitment in achieving ambitious goals. He said that whether a task is big or small, it should be pursued with complete dedication and renewed enthusiasm, a quality that people should learn from a lion.

The hydrogen-powered train will be flagged off by Prime Minister Modi from Jind in Haryana, marking India's entry into a select group of countries developing hydrogen-based rail transport as a cleaner alternative to conventional fuel-powered trains.

The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route as a pilot project and is expected to showcase the potential of hydrogen as an environmentally friendly fuel for the future of Indian Railways.

The project reflects Indian Railways' focus on innovation, energy efficiency and sustainable mobility while supporting the country's broader clean energy objectives and long-term commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States, which are exploring or testing hydrogen-powered rail systems. As the technology is still at an evolving stage, only a limited number of nations currently operate or trial hydrogen-powered trains.

Officials believe the pilot project on the Jind-Sonipat corridor will provide valuable experience for expanding hydrogen-based rail technology across the country's railway network in the coming years.
