Jamshedpur: The ongoing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has intensified across the city, severely affecting businesses, essential services, and industrial operations. Supply from Bharat Gas and Hindustan Petroleum has come to a complete halt, while Indane is currently meeting only about 20% of the total demand, triggering widespread disruption.
The limited availability has forced authorities to prioritise critical services such as hospital kitchens, leaving small hotels, roadside eateries, and catering units struggling to function.
Many establishments have either reduced operations or shut down temporarily.
An official in the district administration stated, “We are in constant touch with supply agencies. Efforts are underway to enhance availability, and we expect a gradual improvement in the coming days.”
The impact of the crisis is spilling into other sectors as well. With global tensions in the Gulf region affecting fuel and logistics, transportation costs have surged, adding pressure on local markets.
Traders warn that this could soon translate into higher retail prices. A Sakchi-based distributor said, “Freight rates are rising steadily due to fuel costs. The current prices are sustained by old inventory—once new stock arrives, consumers will feel the pinch.”
Industries in the Adityapur belt are facing a parallel challenge as the prices of key chemicals continue to climb sharply.
The cost of sodium cyanide, widely used in metal processing, has jumped significantly in recent weeks, pushing up production expenses.
Industry insiders caution that prolonged disruption in supply chains—particularly those linked to West Asian routes—could force multiple units to scale down operations. “If raw material costs keep rising and fuel remains scarce, many small and mid-sized units won’t be able to sustain output,” said an industrial operator.
With more than 50 factories reportedly at risk and thousands of jobs potentially impacted, stakeholders are urging swift intervention to restore supply lines and stabilise prices.
The current situation, if prolonged, could deepen economic stress across both the informal and organised sectors in Jamshedpur.
