Ranchi — In a disturbing incident in the Doranda police station area of Ranchi on Tuesday, a young man was allegedly dragged for several kilometres by a luxury Mercedes car after he protested against the vehicle hitting a woman, officials said.
The accused driver, identified as Jharkhand High Court advocate Manoj Tandon, has been taken into custody.
The incident took place near Rajendra Chowk in Doranda. According to reports, the Mercedes first knocked down a woman. When a young man at the scene objected and tried to stop the car, the driver allegedly attempted to run him over.
The youth became stuck on the bonnet, but the driver continued driving for several kilometres without halting. Home Guard personnel posted along the route attempted to stop the vehicle, but it did not comply.
It is further alleged that the accused later took the injured youth to his residence and assaulted him.
After being alerted, police launched a chase operation, intercepted the vehicle, and rescued the victim. The lawyer was detained, and the injured youth was sent for medical examination.
The incident triggered protests outside the Doranda police station, with a large crowd demanding strict action. The matter also reached the Jharkhand High Court.
The Bar Association informed the court that the lawyer had been detained and sought protection for him from potential mob violence.
A bench led by Chief Justice M.S. Sonak observed that no individual is above the law and directed the police to proceed strictly in accordance with legal provisions.
While refusing immediate relief, the court instructed the state’s Advocate General to coordinate with authorities to ensure the lawyer’s safety.
Police said investigations are ongoing and all angles are being examined.
