Abu Dhabi: Australian all-rounder Cameron Green created history at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction underway at the Etihad Arena here on Monday, as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured his services for a staggering ?25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player ever in the tournament.
Green surpassed the previous record held by his Australia teammate Mitchell Starc, who was bought by KKR for ?24.75 crore at the IPL 2024 auction, when the bidding crossed the ?25 crore mark.
Overall, Green became the third most expensive player in IPL auction history, behind Rishabh Pant, who was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for ?27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, and Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, who fetched ?26.75 crore in the same auction.
The bidding for Green began at his base price of ?2 crore and quickly escalated into a fierce contest between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan withdrew once the bid touched ?13 crore, following which five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered the fray.
KKR and CSK, the two franchises with the biggest purses going into the auction, engaged in an intense duel. KKR had ?64.30 crore at their disposal, while the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK had ?43.40 crore. After several tense moments and internal deliberations, Green became the first player of the evening to breach the ?20 crore mark, before KKR finally clinched the deal at ?25.20 crore.
Under the new IPL regulations, overseas players are capped at a maximum salary of ?18 crore. Accordingly, Green will receive ?18 crore, while the remaining ?7.20 crore will be allocated towards the IPL players’ welfare fund.
Green last featured in the IPL in the 2024 season, representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He scored 255 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 143.25 and claimed 10 wickets in 13 matches at an economy rate of 8.61. The all-rounder has also previously played for Mumbai Indians before being traded.
