It’ll Boost Popularity of Squash Among Youth: PM Modi Congratulates Indian Team on Historic WC Win

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian squash team for winning their first-ever Squash World Cup, stating that the historic achievement will significantly boost the sport’s popularity among the youth.

Hosts India clinched the Squash World Cup title after a dominant victory over top seeds Hong Kong at the Express Avenue Mall in Chennai on Sunday.

“Congratulations to the Indian Squash Team for creating history and winning their first-ever World Cup title at the SDAT Squash World Cup 2025,” the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X.

He praised the players for their dedication and resolve, adding, “Joshna Chinnappa, Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthil Kumar and Anahat Singh have shown tremendous determination and commitment. Their success has made the entire nation proud. This victory will also inspire more young people to take up squash.”

India entered the final determined to overcome memories of their semi-final exit in the previous edition, which was also held at the same venue in 2023.

In the opening match, 39-year-old Chennai native Joshna Chinnappa defeated Hong Kong’s Ka Yi Lee 7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1, giving India an early advantage.

Men’s first string Abhay Singh then extended India’s lead with a commanding performance against Alex Lau, winning 7-1, 7-4, 7-4 in just 19 minutes through aggressive and precise shot-making.

With the top seeds under pressure, Hong Kong’s women’s first string Tomato Ho needed a strong win against India’s 17-year-old Anahat Singh to keep her team in contention.

However, Anahat rose to the occasion, delighting the home crowd with a composed and powerful display. The Delhi-based teenager, who gained international attention after competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at just 14, defeated Ho 7-2, 7-2, 7-5 to seal the title for India.

The victory marked a historic milestone, making India only the sixth nation to win a major World Squash team championship.
