New Delhi — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested two postal department officials — a Postal Inspector and an Assistant — from the Saraikela Head Post Office in Jharkhand, for allegedly accepting a bribe from a job applicant.
The CBI’s Anti-Corruption team caught the duo red-handed while receiving ?20,000 in cash from Ranjan Das, who had recently been selected as a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS). Das had lodged a complaint alleging that the officials demanded the money to process his appointment.
After confirming the authenticity of the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and successfully captured both officials during the transaction. Following their arrest, raids were conducted at their offices and residences, leading to the recovery of cash, official records, and documents related to financial irregularities.
Investigators are now looking into whether other members of the postal staff were involved in the bribery network. Early reports suggest that similar complaints regarding irregularities in the recruitment process and document verification had been made earlier.
Both the accused are being interrogated at the CBI’s Ranchi office and will soon be presented before a special CBI court.
This operation marks the second anti-corruption action by the CBI in Jharkhand in just five days. Recently, the agency arrested CCL HR officer Deepak Giri from Khilari for allegedly demanding ?1.5 lakh and accepting ?50,000 in bribe for a compassionate appointment.
