New Delhi — A SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing on Sunday night following a technical issue in one of its engines, officials at Kolkata Airport confirmed. The airline later stated that all passengers and crew were safe.
“On November 9, SpiceJet flight SG 670 operating from Mumbai to Kolkata experienced a technical issue during descent at Kolkata Airport. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew deplaned normally,” said a SpiceJet spokesperson in an official statement.
The full emergency declared during the landing was lifted at 11:38 p.m., authorities said.
This marks the second such incident in recent months involving the airline. On September 12, a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla (Gujarat) to Mumbai made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) after an outer wheel was found on the runway post take-off. That flight too landed safely, with no injuries reported.
Meanwhile, several carriers — including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet — reported flight delays on Monday due to a malfunction in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and assured that ground staff were assisting travellers to minimize inconvenience.
Airport officials confirmed that the technical issue was later resolved, and flight operations returned to normal.
Financially, SpiceJet has faced a turbulent period. In the April–June quarter, the airline reported a consolidated net loss of ?234 crore, a sharp reversal from the ?158.18 crore profit posted in the same quarter last year.
The airline attributed the decline to geopolitical tensions, international airspace restrictions, and lower demand for leisure travel. Additionally, global supply chain disruptions and engine maintenance delays have slowed the return of grounded aircraft to service.
