Shreyas Iyer Out of ICU, Stable After Spleen Injury During Sydney ODI: Sources

Sydney — Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is currently in stable condition after suffering a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, sources told IANS. Team management officials remain in constant touch with him and are closely monitoring his recovery.

Initially thought to be a rib injury, medical scans later revealed a more serious spleen laceration, prompting his ICU admission to a Sydney hospital. Iyer has since shown steady improvement, and his family is expected to arrive in Australia soon to be by his side.

A spleen laceration involves a tear in the spleen — a soft, blood-rich organ located under the rib cage on the upper left side of the abdomen. Because of its critical role in filtering blood, such injuries can cause significant internal bleeding and require urgent medical care.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib area while fielding during the October 25 match.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his progress. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his daily recovery,” the board said in a statement.

Iyer was injured while taking a diving catch to dismiss Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. The incident occurred in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Carey top-edged a short ball from pacer Harshit Rana. Positioned at backward point, Iyer sprinted back as the ball swirled in the air and dived full stretch to complete a stunning catch near deep third man.

With Iyer responding well to treatment, both the Indian camp and fans remain hopeful that he will make a full recovery in the coming weeks.
