Jharkhand HC Pulls Up Govt Over Municipal Poll Delay, Serves Contempt Notice

Ranchi - The Jharkhand High Court has reprimanded the state government for not holding municipal elections even after repeated orders. The court said officials had disobeyed its directions and issued contempt notices to Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari and other senior IAS officers, asking them to appear on October 14.

The government cited a pending “triple test” for OBC reservations as the reason for the delay, but the court rejected this explanation. The case was filed by outgoing Ranchi Municipal councillor Roshni Khalkho after the January 4, 2024 order to conduct polls within three weeks was ignored.

Municipal bodies in Jharkhand have been without elected representatives since April 2023, with administrators running local governance for more than two years.
