Giridih – High tension erupted at Khandoli Dam in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Monday as hundreds of villagers protesting alleged illegal land acquisition attempted mass “Jal Samadhi” by drowning themselves in the dam.
The protest, organised under the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) and its “Khandoli Bachao Abhiyan,” quickly turned violent, leading to clashes with police and officials.
Villagers accused the administration of forcibly including their ancestral and raiyat land in the dam area during a fresh demarcation drive. Police intervened and pulled villagers out of the water, as the dramatic protest forced heightened security at the site.
JLKM leaders have warned that if their demands for proper demarcation, land return, compensation, and rehabilitation are not met within 15 days, they will launch a larger mass Jal Samadhi movement.
