New Delhi- Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan described the thrilling encounter between South Africa and Afghanistan in Ahmedabad on Wednesday as one of the finest matches ever witnessed in World Cup history. The intense contest required two Super Overs to determine the winner, making it a memorable spectacle for cricket fans.
Both teams delivered an extraordinary performance, with the match ending in a tie at 187 runs in regular play and again in the first Super Over, leading to a rare second Super Over. South Africa ultimately secured victory by four runs after posting 23 runs, while Afghanistan fell just short despite Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashing three sixes in the final Super Over.
Pathan praised the match for its drama and intensity, highlighting the presence of no-balls, free hits, run-outs, and pressure-filled bowling. He also commended Keshav Maharaj’s decisive last delivery in the second Super Over, noting that his tactical bowling and composure under pressure reflected his class and confidence.
In another match played later in the evening at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, West Indies registered a convincing 30-run victory over England. Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 76 helped West Indies post 196/6, while a strong spin attack led by Gudakesh Motie restricted England to 166 in their chase. Despite Sam Curran’s fighting 43, England failed to reach the target, handing West Indies their second consecutive Group C win.
Pathan credited West Indies’ spin trio for setting up the victory, stating that their strategy of relying on spin bowling proved highly effective. He particularly appreciated Roston Chase’s performance, noting that his dismissal of England captain Jos Buttler was a turning point. Pathan also praised Motie’s skillful bowling against right-handed batters and highlighted the team’s improved fielding effort, including Rovman Powell’s remarkable catch.
He further emphasized Chase’s all-round contribution, mentioning that his crucial batting at number four helped stabilize the innings after early setbacks. Pathan admired Chase’s strategic bowling approach, pointing out how he varied his line and length to trouble batters.
Former cricketer Piyush Chawla also lauded Rutherford’s composed innings under pressure. He noted that Rutherford not only played aggressive shots but also rotated the strike smartly and ensured he stayed till the end of the innings. Chawla added that Rutherford’s knock provided West Indies with 15–20 crucial extra runs.
With back-to-back impressive wins and an effective spin unit, West Indies appear to have developed a strong winning strategy as the tournament progresses.
