T20 World Cup: Gambhir Calls Surya’s Unbeaten 84 vs USA One of the Best Pressure Innings in T20Is

Mumbai: India head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Suryakumar Yadav for his match-winning unbeaten 84 against the USA in the T20 World Cup 2026, describing it as a “masterclass” and one of the finest innings played under pressure in T20 internationals. The performance helped India begin their campaign on a winning note.

Leading from the front, the Mumbai batter and captain delivered a brilliant knock of 84 not out. Supported by a strong bowling performance led by Mohammad Siraj, who picked up 3 wickets for 29 runs, India defeated the USA by 29 runs.

“It was a strong start, and Surya’s innings was simply outstanding — a true masterclass. It ranks among the best T20I innings played under pressure,” Gambhir told BCCI.tv.

Looking back at India’s recovery after early setbacks, the Indian captain described the victory as both special and instructive for the team and support staff.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to secure a win after facing a few difficult moments. At the same time, it serves as an important lesson for the players and support staff. Having been in similar situations earlier, I understood the importance of staying at the crease for the team,” he said.

India found themselves in trouble at 77/6 before Suryakumar and Axar Patel built a crucial 41-run partnership for the seventh wicket. The skipper then showcased his signature 360-degree shot-making and power-hitting, smashing two sixes and two fours in the final over to push India to 161/9 in 20 overs.

India’s bowlers then delivered a disciplined performance. Siraj led the attack with three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each, restricting the USA to 132/8 and sealing a 29-run victory.

The captain acknowledged that batting was challenging and emphasised the need for honest self-evaluation despite the win.

“The pitch was difficult to bat on, and we are not very familiar with such conditions. However, we cannot ignore our shortcomings. We must analyse how we could have batted better. Learning from such experiences is essential,” he stated.

Speaking about captaining India at his home ground, the skipper described the moment as memorable and praised the energetic crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.

“Playing at Wankhede is always special. Walking out as captain here was an incredible feeling, and the crowd’s energy made it even more memorable,” he added.
