Joshna Chinappa and Veer Chotrani Crowned Women’s and Men’s Champions at Western India Squash Tournament

Mumbai: Top seeds Joshna Chinappa and Veer Chotrani stamped their authority by clinching the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively at the 80th CCI Western India Squash Tournament, held at the iconic Cricket Club of India (CCI) courts on Sunday.

In the women’s final, veteran campaigner Joshna Chinappa showcased her class and composure to register a fighting comeback win against second seed Sanya Vats. After conceding the opening game, the 39-year-old elevated her tempo and court control to prevail 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, reaffirming her stature as one of India’s most accomplished squash players. The victory marked Chinappa’s fifth title at the tournament and her first since the 2007–08 season.

Reflecting on the triumph, Chinappa said the win carried special significance. Having trained and competed at the CCI courts since the age of 12, she described lifting the trophy at the historic venue as a moment of immense pride.

The men’s final, in contrast, proved to be a dominant display by Veer Chotrani. The top seed delivered a clinical performance to overpower second seed Suraj Chand in straight games, winning 11-9, 11-9, 11-2. The emphatic victory earned Chotrani his second Western India Squash Tournament title, having previously claimed the crown in the 2022–23 season.

Chotrani highlighted the emotional value of the win, noting that he has been practising at the CCI since the age of seven. He added that the venue’s rich legacy made the triumph even more meaningful, placing him alongside a distinguished list of past champions.
