Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is rigorously training with local football players ahead of his much-anticipated friendly match against football icon Lionel Messi’s team on December 13.
The match, scheduled to take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, is part of Messi’s ‘GOAT Tour 2025’. A passionate football enthusiast, the Chief Minister has been dedicating 45 minutes each day to prepare for the game.
Despite a packed day of official engagements, he hit the ground on Sunday night to practise under floodlights with young players. According to sources in the Chief Minister’s Office, Revanth Reddy took part in an energetic and focused training session.
He will lead a select team of players from Hyderabad in the match against Team Messi.
The Argentinian superstar is set to arrive in Hyderabad on December 13 — a moment the Chief Minister has called historic for the city. “I look forward to welcoming and hosting G.O.A.T. Lionel Messi on December 13. It is an exciting moment for our city and for every football fan who has dreamt of seeing a legend like you on our soil. Hyderabad is ready to host him with warmth, pride and the spirit that defines our people,” Reddy wrote on X.
Messi recently announced that Hyderabad has been added to his tour stops alongside Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi.
Football lovers in Hyderabad are eagerly awaiting the clash, dubbed ‘Revanth Reddy 9 vs Lionel Messi 10’. The Chief Minister will don jersey number 9, while Messi will sport his iconic number 10. Selected students from government schools are also expected to join the ‘RR9’ team.
Beyond the football excitement, the state government plans to invite Messi to become the global brand ambassador for its ‘Telangana Rising’ initiative. The Chief Minister aims to collaborate with the football legend to promote the state’s potential in sports, tourism, investments, and youth engagement on a global stage.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced that Telangana’s Vision-2047 will be showcased during the friendly match.
The event is part of the Congress government’s two-year celebrations, which kick off with the Chief Minister’s statewide district visits starting December 1.
Additionally, preparations are underway for the ‘Telangana Rising 2047 Global Summit’ set to be held at Bharat Future City on December 8 and 9. The landmark Vision 2047 document will be unveiled during the summit, attended by global leaders and achievers across various sectors.
With sports and tourism playing key roles in the state’s long-term vision, Messi’s visit is expected to elevate the significance of the celebrations.
