South Africa secured a historic 2-0 series win on Wednesday after demolishing India by 408 runs in the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. Off-spinner Simon Harmer delivered a sensational spell of 6-37, leading the Proteas to their largest-ever Test victory over India by runs, while also handing the hosts their biggest defeat in Test history.
Chasing an improbable target of 549, India folded for just 140 on day five, with veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja offering the only resistance through a valiant 54. The victory marked South Africa’s first Test series triumph in India since 2000, making it only their second such win in 25 years. Temba Bavuma thus joined Hansie Cronje, maintaining his unbeaten record as Test captain.
From the moment South Africa won the toss, the match swung decisively in their favour. India’s famed dominance at home suffered another painful setback, following their 3-0 loss to New Zealand last year, raising fresh concerns for the reigning World Test Championship holders.
Resuming on 27/2, India survived a few early scares—B Sai Sudharsan was momentarily saved by a no-ball, while Kuldeep Yadav got a life when Aiden Markram spilled a chance at slip. But Harmer soon took control. He bowled Kuldeep with a straighter delivery and dismissed Dhruv Jurel three balls later.
Rishabh Pant briefly counterattacked, smashing a four and a towering six off Keshav Maharaj, but he fell for 13 while attempting to defend Harmer’s slower ball, which bounced sharply to take the shoulder of the bat and loop to slip.
Sudharsan fought hard but eventually edged Senuran Muthusamy to slip after lunch, where Markram completed his eighth catch of the match.
Jadeja tried delaying the inevitable with an aggressive approach, reaching his fifty in style by flicking Maharaj for a six over deep mid-wicket. But South Africa kept striking. Washington Sundar edged a quicker ball to Markram—claiming a record ninth catch—while Harmer earned his well-deserved five-for.
Harmer added one more when Nitish Kumar Reddy’s reverse sweep brushed his glove and was caught behind. The end neared as Jadeja’s charge down the track ended in a smart stumping by Kyle Verreynne.
The final moment came when Marco Jansen pulled off a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Mohammed Siraj off Maharaj, sparking jubilant celebrations as South Africa savoured a rare and monumental series win on Indian soil.
